Turns out not all monks are as austere as you might think. AFP reports that a Buddhist monk in Myanmar was caught in possession of over 4 million methamphetamine pills. Most of the pills were stored in his monastery.
Meth is a serious issue for Myanmar. Both the amount of pills seized and drug arrests in general about doubled from 2015 to 2016, according to the AFP. Organized crime may seem like an unusual career path for a Buddhist monk, but it may not be unique.
In November, prosecutors in Thailand announced plans to charge an entire abbot with money laundering.
